What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a progressive bacterial infection that damages the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. It begins when plaque accumulates along the gumline. If not removed, plaque hardens into tartar, allowing harmful bacteria to trigger inflammation and gradually destroy connective tissue and bone.

Gum disease develops in two primary stages:

Gingivitis

Gums appear red, swollen, and bleed during brushing or flossing. At this stage, infection affects only the soft tissue. With professional cleaning and consistent oral hygiene, gingivitis is reversible.

Periodontitis

Infection spreads below the gumline. Connective tissue attachment weakens. Jawbone begins to deteriorate. Deep periodontal pockets form around teeth, trapping bacteria and accelerating bone loss.

Who Needs Gum Disease Treatment?

Gum disease often progresses without severe pain. Many patients delay care because symptoms seem minor. By the time discomfort appears, bone support may already be affected. Early evaluation prevents long-term damage.

You may need Gum Disease Treatment if you identify with one of the following:

1. The Bleeding Gums Patient

Problem: Gums bleed during brushing or flossing.
Solution: Professional scaling and root planing remove plaque and tartar beneath the gumline to reduce inflammation and control infection.

2. The Persistent Bad Breath Patient

Problem: Ongoing bad breath that does not improve with routine hygiene.
Solution: Deep periodontal cleaning eliminates bacteria trapped in gum pockets.

3. The Receding Gum Patient

Problem: Gums pull away from teeth, exposing roots and increasing sensitivity.
Solution: Periodontal therapy stabilizes tissue and slows further attachment loss.

4. The Loose or Shifting Teeth Patient

Problem: Teeth feel mobile or bite alignment changes.
Solution: Structured periodontal treatment controls infection and protects remaining bone support.

5. The Patient with Diabetes

Problem: Increased inflammation and slower healing response.
Solution: Regular periodontal maintenance reduces bacterial burden and supports tissue stability.

6. The Smoker

Problem: Higher risk of infection and reduced healing capacity.
Solution: Targeted periodontal care and consistent monitoring limit disease progression.

7. The Family History Patient

Problem: Genetic susceptibility increases the risk of periodontal bone loss.
Solution: Early screening and preventive maintenance lower long-term progression risk.

If you notice these signs, schedule a periodontal evaluation before structural damage advances.

How Gum Disease Treatment Is Performed at Legacy Dental

We provide structured Gum Disease Treatment in Salt Lake City, UT, based on measurable findings such as pocket depth and bone levels. Diagnosis determines the stage of disease and guides precise treatment.

We measure pocket depth using a calibrated periodontal probe, assess gum attachment levels, and review digital radiographs to evaluate bone support. Accurate diagnosis determines disease stage and guides targeted therapy.

We perform deep cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar below the gumline. We smooth root surfaces to reduce bacterial retention and support tissue reattachment. Local anesthesia ensures patient comfort during treatment.

In areas with persistent deep pockets, we place localized antimicrobial agents to reduce bacterial load and enhance healing response.

After active treatment, patients return every three to four months for maintenance cleanings. These visits remove bacterial buildup and reduce the risk of recurrence.

We reassess pocket depth and attachment levels at follow-up visits to confirm infection control and protect remaining bone support.

Structured treatment and consistent monitoring remain essential for long-term periodontal stability.

Tips to Prevent Gum Disease

Consistent daily care and regular professional monitoring play a critical role in preventing gum disease and protecting long-term oral health.

Brush Twice Daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Clean along the gumline to remove plaque before it hardens into tartar.

Floss Every Day: Floss removes plaque and food debris between teeth where brushing cannot reach. Consistent flossing reduces gum inflammation and pocket formation.

Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings: Professional cleanings remove hardened tartar and allow early detection of gum inflammation before bone loss develops.

Avoid Tobacco Products: Smoking increases infection risk and reduces blood flow to gum tissue. Quitting tobacco improves healing and lowers progression risk.

Manage Systemic Health Conditions: Control conditions such as diabetes through medical care and monitoring. Stable blood sugar levels help reduce periodontal inflammation.

FAQs

Dentists sometimes place localized antibacterial agents in deeper pockets to reduce bacterial levels. Systemic antibiotics are not routine and are prescribed only when clinically necessary based on infection severity and overall health.

Dentists reverse gingivitis with professional cleaning and improved home care. Periodontitis cannot be reversed, but structured gum disease treatment controls infection, reduces pocket depth, and protects remaining bone support through ongoing maintenance.

Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of scaling, root planing, and periodontal maintenance. Coverage varies by provider and plan. A detailed evaluation allows the office to verify benefits and explain expected out-of-pocket costs.

Dentists use local anesthesia to keep deep cleaning comfortable. Most patients report mild soreness for a short period after treatment. Following post-care instructions helps reduce sensitivity and supports healing.

A regular cleaning removes plaque above the gumline. Deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, removes tartar below the gumline and treats periodontal infection by reducing pocket depth and inflammation.

Yes, but smoking slows healing and increases infection risk. Patients who smoke require close monitoring and consistent maintenance visits. Quitting tobacco significantly improves treatment response and long-term periodontal stability.

Yes. Untreated periodontal infection destroys connective tissue and jawbone support. As bone levels decline, teeth loosen and may require extraction. Early treatment significantly lowers the risk of permanent tooth loss.

Research links periodontal inflammation with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Chronic infection increases systemic inflammatory burden. Controlling gum disease supports overall health and reduces complications associated with uncontrolled inflammation.

Dentists measure pocket depth using a periodontal probe and review digital imaging to evaluate bone levels. These measurable findings determine disease stage and guide treatment planning for precise infection control.

Delaying treatment allows bacteria to destroy bone and deepen periodontal pockets. As damage progresses, treatment becomes more complex and costly. Early intervention preserves bone support and improves long-term outcomes.

I have honestly only had my initial interaction with them, x rays setting up a plan, things of that nature but so far this has been the best dental experience of my lifetime. Dr. Call was incredibly helpful, explaining things in greater detail than I’ve ever seen in dental practice, he identified issues I wanted corrected before I even said anything. (he had x rays to go off of) I am very much looking forward to working with him and have already begun recommending him to friends and family. I will update as I continue my journey with them but so far couldn’t speak highly enough about them all!

I have new insurance and wasn't sure where to go. Like everyone else, I viewed ratings for the best dentist and sure enough, Salt Lakers did not disappoint. The Legacy Dental Staff is like a well run machine. Everyone is nice, professional and knows what they are doing. The office is large but its not overwhelming and everyone knows, going to the dentist can be scary. Legacy is calm and welcoming and everyone is there to make sure your comfort is number one. And of course, every person for every step of my appointment was excellent. Dr. Campbell has a very gentle manner. I wish I had found this office years ago. Thank you!

This was my first time visiting Legacy Dental with Dr. Jonathan Campbell office.

I had a part of my old filling come off, and they were able to schedule me for the very next day, which I truly appreciated. I arrived on time and had completed the new patient paperwork online prior to my arrival. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed into a pleasant and professional environment. The front desk gal (Heather)already knew who I was and made me feel comfortable right away. Heather at the front desk was especially welcoming and helpful.

Shortly after checking in, I was taken to the operatory by the dental assistant, Keisha. She was excellent!!, knowledgeable, very communicative, personable, and attentive to my concerns before the doctor even came in.

Dr. Jonathan Campbell then performed the examination, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I was very nervous about seeing a new dentist, but all my fears disappeared. He was gentle, efficient, and incredibly professional. Hands down, he is the best dentist I have ever had in my life.

I left the office feeling great and, surprisingly, actually enjoyed the visit—something I never thought I would say about a dental appointment.

I live in EM, and it takes me about an hour and a half to get there, but it is absolutely worth the drive to be seen by Dr. Campbell and his outstanding staff. Without a doubt, this is my dentist for life.

I have been going to Legacy Dental for 15 years, and they are amazing. Recently, I chipped a tooth and was messaging them on their app at 8:30 at night. They were responding and got me an appointment next day. I was able to meet Tina, who is an amazing assistant. She brought in Dr. Call to help, and they were an awesome team together. Humorous, good bedside manner, great conversationalists that made me feel at ease, and they fixed my smile. Brooke was awesome at getting me through insurance and billing, and extremely friendly. Thank you for continuing to provide exceptional service that goes way above and beyond.

I’ve had a fairly intense dental phobia for most of my life, that combined with years of addiction and severe depression really took a toll on my mouth and on my smile. Years ago I started the process of getting dentures with a different dentist and I had such a bad experience that I never wanted to set foot in another dental office again. Then last year when my remaining teeth started to fail, I reached out to Legacy Dental after seeing an add. At my first appointment Dr. H and his staff immediately put me at ease, there was no judgment and it was clear that they knew what they were doing. Throughout the entire process they were professional and they were friendly, and they took really good care of me.
Now here I am seven months later and I have my smile back, for the first time that I can remember I can smile confidently, and I can eat normally. And I owe it all to Legacy dental and the wonderful care that they provided.

Recently visited Legacy Dental with a dental emergency. The team got me in same day and the staff was both courteous and professional. The doctor quickly assessed the issue and took me through my options in detail. The staff then helped arrange a follow up meeting with a partner clinic to treat my issue before I left. Thank you so much Legacy team, a very memorable and positive experience.

I went in for Wisdom tooth pain. They had a last minute cancel and I got in there, same day! Which I was extremely thankful for cuz of the intense pain I was experiencing. I was in and out of there, WITH them being able to do the extraction, and X-ray in less than an hour! They were awesome! And! It was a fraction of the cost of what other offices were charging for the procedure. Especially cuz I don’t have insurance. Amazing staff, excellent dentist! 100/100 for me.

Every single staff including dentists have been sweet and positive, and have always made me feel comfortable. I avoided going to the dentist most of my life, I just wish I would have known about them sooner.
