General Dentistry vs. Family Dentistry

Approximately 80% of dentists practice "general dentistry" and while many of them do treat patients of all ages, they are often more restrictive in the age groups they work with.

At Legacy Dental, we are a family dental practice. Therefore, we have the experience and expertise to work with your entire family- from infancy to senior adult. This means that we can get everyone taken care of in one appointment and you don't have to run around town to different offices to have your teeth taken care of.

Pediatric Dentistry vs. Family Dentistry

Typically, a general dentist will treat younger children that don't require specialized dental treatment. These dentists often handle cleanings and basic dental care. On the other hand, if a child requires specialized treatment, they are often sent to a pediatric dentist, who only treats children under the age of 18.

If you prefer to visit the same dentist with your child, a family dentist may be the better choice. This way, you can schedule all appointments in one day and have everyone taken care of. At Legacy Dental, we don't treat just one age group. We have the experience and expertise for treating oral issues in all age groups.

Dental Care Life Stages

We understand that as you grow, your dental needs change. Here are some of the dental care life stages you can expect at Legacy Dental in Salt Lake City.

Babies

Once your baby's teeth start coming in, and even before, they are vulnerable to oral diseases, including tooth decay and cavities. After the first tooth comes in at around 6 months, it's important to begin regular dental visits. By starting oral care early on- both by visiting a dentist and practicing proper oral hygiene at home- you help your baby develop good habits as they grow.

Early Childhood

As they naturally begin to lose their baby teeth and their permanent teeth erupt, your children will require specialized dental care. During this phase of life, it's critical that you establish and reinforce good oral hygiene habits and schedule routine cleanings- at least annually, but preferably every 6 months. This will prevent issues such as cavities and tooth decay, as well as reduce the risk of other serious dental conditions.

Teens & Young Adults

Depending on their diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene habits, many teens are vulnerable to cavities and decay, as well as gum disease. Therefore, it is critical to continue routine dental care throughout this age. Also, we can monitor for issues, such as malocclusions and recommend braces or aligners, like Invisalign,  to rectify the problem before it progresses too far and requires surgical intervention.

Adults

We understand that the older you get, the busier you get- which can make it easy to skip your routine dental care appointments.  However, it's important to keep in mind that oral care is just as important for an adult as it is for children and teens. In fact, after the age of 35, your risk of tooth loss due to periodontal disease or tooth decay increases. Other issues that are common for adult patients include TMJ, breakdown of fillings, oral cancer, and more.

Senior Adults

As your body continues to age, especially beyond the age of 65, new oral challenges will begin to present themselves. Some of the most common issues include oral cancer, serious gum disease, root decay, dry mouth, and attrition. However, you can reduce your risk of these and other issues by practicing proper oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits.

  • ‘‘Dr. Campbell and his staff create a warm, welcoming environment while providing honest, quality care! I have been to so many dentists in the past who have made me feel anxious or have tried to “upsell” me on treatments I haven’t needed. Dr. Campbell is the exact opposite of that! If you want a dentist that is patient, friendly, thorough, and values integrity, I highly recommend this office!’’

    Michelle J. (Legacy Dental Patient)
  • ‘‘Great friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Always making sure you don't have any questions and are satisfied. Only dental office I know with automatic financing. Just all around great office!’’
