Full Mouth Reconstruction

Full mouth reconstruction replaces all or most of your teeth. The goal of this procedure is to improve the health and appearance of your jawbone, teeth, and gums. The process can be long and expensive- and usually involves surgery that alters the overall appearance of your teeth, including the size, shape, and position.

Depending on the severity of underlying dental issues, full mouth reconstruction may include various treatment options, including:

Some patients require orthognathic surgery to reposition the jaw. Full mouth reconstruction may be worth it if you're missing most or all teeth due to trauma, decay, or an underlying medical condition such as oral cancer. In addition, it may correct dental issues that result from bruxism. The dentists at Legacy Dental in Salt Lake City, Utah have the experience and expertise to perform all of the procedures of a full mouth reconstruction.

In addition, patients who have a full mouth restoration at Legacy Dental often report that they no longer suffer from headaches, sinus pain, or have bad breath.

Are You a Good Candidate for Full Mouth Reconstruction?

Typically, the most ideal candidates for full mouth reconstruction are dealing with multiple dental issues, including:

  • Heavy wear/tear on teeth, such as cracked/broken teeth resulting from bruxism
  • Gum disease
  • Severe tooth decay
  • GERD (severe acid reflux)
  • Loss of jawbone density
  • Missing multiple teeth
  • Harmful metals used in prior dental repairs
  • Misaligned bite
  • Ground-down teeth from bruxism

If you are experiencing tooth loss or severe pain, having difficulty eating, or dealing with toxicity because of synthetic materials used in prior repairs, you may be ready to consider a full mouth reconstruction with Legacy Dental.

Since there is so much work required, you'll want to work with professionals that have the experience and expertise necessary. Also, we have plenty of experience with patients who suffer from dental anxiety, so we can help you relax while we take care of your dental issues.

Steps of Full Mouth Reconstruction

There are several steps involved in full mouth reconstruction. The success of these procedures depends on these steps being done properly. After all, ultimately, you need a healthy mouth to support the reconstruction.

A full mouth reconstruction can take a minimum of several months to a full year- the length of time depends on what is required. At Legacy Dental, full mouth reconstruction consists of the following 9 steps:

Consultation

The first step is the initial consultation. At this time, you will get to know the team that will be working on your full mouth reconstruction. You will be able to ask questions and address any concerns you have at this time. We understand that you want to work with a team that has experience in these procedures and who will take the appropriate steps to keep your mouth healthy from start to finish.

Initial Impressions & Designing Smile

After the consultation, the next step is to get x-rays and other necessary scans, as well as initial impressions taken of your mouth. This will give the team an idea of your tooth structure and bite, as well as any prior dental work or tooth decay that needs to be addressed.

Number 3

Creation of Treatment Plan

After you and the dental team are aware of the current state of your mouth, the next step is to create your full mouth reconstruction treatment plan. The goal is to create a mouth that is functional, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing. We want your oral health to be improved and your confidence to be boosted.

Removal of Old Dentistry

As we begin the process of full mouth reconstruction, we will remove any prior dental work. There are several reasons for this:

Older dental work can shift/shrink away from your tooth, creating room for decay

Removal of old dental work allows us to start from scratch so you can be sure that only safe, biocompatible materials are used.

Removal of Decay

If you have tooth decay that hasn't been treated, it will be addressed at this time. If not treated, existing decay can threaten the stability and life expectancy of your reconstruction. Treatments include:

  • Fillings for small cavities
  • Root canal for teeth that have infected soft tissue
  • Extractions if decay is beyond treatment followed by placement of a dental implant to preserve the jawbone and surrounding teeth
  • Oral surgery in extreme cases

Since we are rebuilding a healthy set of teeth, we try to avoid using dentures in a full mouth reconstruction.

Treatment of Periodontal Disease

The next step in a full mouth reconstruction is scaling, planing, and treating pockets. If your gums are unhealthy, they may pull away from your natural teeth and implants, which can cause teeth to become loose or come out. Gum health is also critical for prevention of health issues including stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

Preparation of Foundation/Build-Up

In this step, the dental team will prepare your teeth for any additional work that may be required. Once we address any underlying issues, we can move forward with the full mouth restoration.

Take Teeth Impressions

The next step is to take an impression of your teeth as they are. This will allow us to design crowns, veneers, implants, inlays/onlays, and other dental appliances as needed with your healthy mouth as the basis.

Number 3

Restorations Created & Placed

The final step in the process is the creation of your restorations. The lab will create them based on your preferences of color and shape.

Cost of Full Mouth Reconstruction

On average, a full mouth restoration costs between $20,000 to $70,000. While this may change as the process progresses, you can break it down into the following treatment costs:

  • ‘‘Dr. Campbell and his staff create a warm, welcoming environment while providing honest, quality care! I have been to so many dentists in the past who have made me feel anxious or have tried to “upsell” me on treatments I haven’t needed. Dr. Campbell is the exact opposite of that! If you want a dentist that is patient, friendly, thorough, and values integrity, I highly recommend this office!’’

    Michelle J. (Legacy Dental Patient)
  • ‘‘Great friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Always making sure you don't have any questions and are satisfied. Only dental office I know with automatic financing. Just all around great office!’’
