Smile Design in Salt Lake City, UT

Your smile is the first thing you see. Unfortunately, not everyone has a picture-perfect smile. If you’re not happy with your smile, you’re not alone. Over the years, no matter how diligent we are with oral hygiene, teeth are worn down and lose their natural luster. They become discolored and damaged due to daily life.

However, at Legacy Dental, we offer smile design- also often referred to as a smile makeover. This is the process of using one or more cosmetic procedures to improve the aesthetics of your smile.

If you want to feel younger, look more attractive, boost your confidence, and improve your chances of advancing in your career, smile design may a good idea.

Benefits of Smile Design

There are several benefits associated with smile design, including:

  • Improves Oral Health: While smile design does focus on the aesthetics of your smile, it does also address dental issues that impact your oral health. For example, crowded teeth can make it challenging to brush/floss your teeth- increasing your risk of tooth decay.
  • Improves Overall Health: Your oral health impacts your overall health. For example, if you have bite issues, you may struggle with biting and digesting your food properly. Smile design eliminates these issues, restoring your chewing functionality, and improving your overall health.
  • Improves Confidence: Your smile says a lot about how you feel about yourself. If you’re not smiling, you probably have low self-confidence. However, if you have these problems treated, you can also improve your confidence.
  • Improves Tooth Color: When your smile is bright and white, you look much younger. In fact, your overall appearance is dramatically improved. A white smile also improves your chances of being promoted for a new position or being hired for a new job. After all, most places want to hire someone that exudes positivity.
  • Improves Your First Impression: Your smile is the first thing people see when they meet you. Therefore, it is what they will think of when they see you. Smile design allows you to make a great first impression.

Issues Addressed by Smile Design

Smile design addresses a variety of dental issues. During your consultation visit, the dentist will discuss your condition as well as your needs and goals for treatment to build a customized plan for you. Every patient is different and will therefore have different needs. Some of the issues addressed include:

Damaged Teeth

Your teeth are designed to be strong and durable. However, they can still be damaged in a variety of ways from chewing on ice to a vehicle or sports trauma. No matter what has caused the damage, procedures used in smile design can restore your smile.

Misaligned or Gapped Teeth

If your teeth are crooked and there are gaps between them, it can ruin an otherwise perfect smile. In addition, your risk of bacteria and plaque buildup increases.

Discolored Teeth

Over the years, teeth become discolored due to natural aging or lifestyle habits. No matter what has caused the discoloration, smile design procedures can rectify it.

Missing Teeth

There are many things that can cause and/or contribute to tooth loss. If you are missing teeth, you probably have many concerns that need to be addressed. Smile design can improve the appearance and functionality of your smile.

Gummy Smile

When you smile, if you see a lot of gums and only a little bit of teeth, you may have exceptionally short teeth or you may have excessive gum tissue. Either way, a smile makeover can give you a normal, beautiful smile.

Smile Design Procedures

Every patient is different and will therefore have different needs and goals. This means that your smile design experience will not look exactly like anyone else’s. During your consultation, we will do a comprehensive exam and x-rays. We will discuss our findings, as well as address any questions and concerns you may have.

The procedures commonly used in smile design include:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • Dental veneers
  • Dental bonding
  • Gum contouring
  • Dental implants

Since most of these procedures are purely cosmetic, dental insurance may or may not cover them. Our office staff will use your treatment plan to consult with your provider to determine coverage. Before you leave from your consultation, you will have a quote on what you can expect to pay.

Designing Your New Smile

There are several steps involved in designing your new smile:

Consultation

The first step is the consultation. During this visit, we will examine your mouth, take x-rays, and make an impression of your mouth. We will also discuss your personal goals and your family history. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask! We believe that you should understand what is happening in your mouth.

Once we determine what you need, we’ll create a treatment plan.

Procedure

Once we’ve created the treatment plan, it’s time to move forward with the procedures. We will perform the procedures in the most appropriate order.

Follow-Up

In order to ensure that your dental restorations last as long as possible, it’s important to practice proper oral hygiene. In addition, you should be visiting the clinic every 6 months for a dental cleaning and exam.

Smile Design FAQs

Below, you will find some of the most frequently asked questions about smile design at Legacy Dental.

There are several reasons why you might want to improve your smile- both aesthetic and health reasons. A damaged smile can cause you to feel self-conscious in social settings and eventually can make you avoid going out. In addition, if teeth are crooked, they are harder to clean- which increases a patient’s risk of tooth decay. Finally, missing teeth can lead to bone loss and difficulty eating.

These procedures can be done on anyone regardless of age. The only caveat is that they have to be in good oral and overall health so they can undergo the surgery.

Every patient is different. Smile design can involve only one of the above procedures- or it can involve several. The dentist will review your situation and make a recommendation based on his findings.

The length of time it takes for your smile design depends on the type of procedure you choose. Each procedure takes a different amount of time, so its next to impossible to define.

If you have stains on your teeth, teeth whitening can help. While you can find OTC kits that allow you to whiten at home, professional whitening will provide better, longer-lasting results.

While tooth loss in pediatric patients is normal, once the permanent teeth have come in, they should stay. When you lose one or more permanent teeth, it impacts your oral and overall health. If you have tooth loss, we will recommend dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
