What made you decide to checkout a Cocofloss review?

You’re on a beach somewhere surrounded by friends, listening to music, feeling the sunshine on your face… and flossing.

Oh, you don’t do that? Weird!

Well, you're a highly practical person and would like to review of Cocofloss by a qualified dentist, before you spend your hard earned dollars. We're here to help you out on this regard.

Our registered resident Dental Hygienist, Katie Poulsen, took the time to try it and review the Cocofloss for your appreciation

After receiving many questions about this new dental floss, Katie kindly put together her honest review of Cocofloss

We go through important questions like - does it help people with generally healthy teeth or can it be especially helpful for those who recently gone through the dental implant surgery?   Does dental floss replace professional teeth whitening or regular cleaning services etc?

My opinion as a registered dental hygienist regarding Cocofloss.

Cocofloss positions itself in the market as a luxury dental floss that can remove stains and plaque from your gums and teeth. But is it really worth it? How does it outperform your average pharmacy floss at removing bacteria and plaque buildup?

It touts flavors like mint, mango, passion fruit, vanilla, and strawberry. Cocofloss is stated to be coated in coconut oil.

It straight-away appeals to your sense of smell and taste. This creates a positive reinforcement, improving the chances of building a habit of flossing regularly. if you ask me, that's a big win by itself!

They are designed with hundreds of filaments that clean the mouth better. The company proclaims to be PFAS free (polyfluoroalkyl substances) and vegan. To add to all these, the floss comes in brightly colored adorable packaging.

What is Cocofloss made of?

Coconut is in just about everything nowadays, from lotions to soaps and now floss. The coconut gained popularity in dentistry from coconut oil pulling.

To oil pull, you must use coconut oil, or any natural oil, in the mouth and pull it through the teeth in a swishing manner for 20 minutes. Studies have shown that oil pulling can reduce the amount of plaque formation that causes gingivitis, but so does a prescription mouth rinse. You can choose between oil pulling for 20 minutes or swishing a prescription mouth rinse for 2 minutes.

How does this help with floss?

Coconut oil-infused floss

If you have to pull oil for 20 minutes for it to be effective, conductive reasoning would suggest you’d have to floss for 20 minutes for Cocofloss’ coconut oil-infused floss to be adequate.

Dental hygienists can’t even get most of their patients to floss once daily for one minute, let alone 20.

Cocofloss is PFAS free, does it matter?

PFAS free means it is free of a resin material, which makes things more corrosive-resistant.

Some research suggests high levels of PFAS can cause a change in liver, thyroid, and hormone levels. Cocofloss company claims that these are found in cheaper plastic floss alternatives. However, research is still ongoing, and much is unknown about the actual effects of PFAS.

Cocofloss is not the first dental floss to hit the market on being PFAS free. Many other dental flosses have been tested and achieved this too. It is sometimes helpful in situation such as when one got food stuck between teeth and is confused with what type of dentist does he need at that moment. If it is  emergency you can seek to the emergency dentistry.

Now, let’s get to the nitty-gritty.

My opinion as a registered dental hygienist regarding Cocofloss.

Overall my experience with Cocofloss was common.

Did I feel like I was sitting on a beach somewhere having a flossing party? No.

Will I switch from my beloved Johnson and Johnson Reach floss? Probably not.

Here are the details:

  • Cocofloss is comparable to Johnson and Johnson Reach in the way it cleans and in mint flavor.
  • I didn’t experience a difference in my gums from the coconut oil.
  • Access to Cocofloss wasn’t as easy as getting it at the store; however, I didn’t sign up for the subscription.
  • Cocofloss packaging is colorful and cute, but it’s not as functional as other brands.

As a dental professional, I have concluded that not all dental floss is created equal.

There isn’t one dental floss (or interdental cleaner) for every mouth. Some people might even need to use multiple kinds in their mouths. Keep this in mind when choosing products for your oral health.
